Tāo Jūn

In the early years of his childhood, Takōki and his family bid farewell to the Azure Isles in favor of moving to Radiant Harbor for work and a life of excitement. Tao’s mother took up commission work of selling robes, while his father worked as a pearl diver. For a time they were well off, and for all intents and purposes, they prospered in their own way.

Things changed, though, after his father’s accident. A run-in with a sharpedo left him without a leg and out of a job. To make up for it, his mother took on more work even as she continued caring for husband and son, while his father searched. Unfortunately, things were not that simple.

It was hard to forget the moment when his father declared, with a finality, that he had given up. Determination had dissolved into apathy, and there was nothing for a man like him, and there wouldn’t be any. That was the day his parents would get into their first fight. When the nightmare truly began.

But things are different now. Now, he has a job.

A job was not his initial goal. When the opportunity arose, Tao would bid the harbor, and all its baggage, farewell. It wasn’t easy— Sneaking away while his father slept off a drunken stupor, begging for money so he could pay for passage on the nearest cart or ship, take the reigns.

He was quick on his feet, and someone had taken notice. And when they finally caught up to the young man, they offered him not money, but a job— The position of a courier.

He almost refused outright, until he thought about it. Work until there was enough money to slip away before anyone had realized he was gone. Realizing opportunity for what it was, he grabbed the reins. But then there was still the matter of his father.

He came home to a fight. Verbal at first before it became physical. Tao fought tooth and nail, tired, spiteful, refusing to go back to the way things were.

And he won’t ever forget the look on his father’s face. The surprise. The fear— When his newfound viciousness rewarded him with evolution, with victory. How ironic…that he suddenly couldn’t wait for Tao to leave.

Don’t fret, father dearest.
