Tokushou Shurei

Born into the Tokushou family, he was born into wealth. Abundance of resources at his disposal even before he could speak. Shurei grew up in an awkward household. His parents doesn't openly show their affections towards him. His home was filled with servants who tends to his every wants and needs. Shurei was never a fussy child. He doesn't desire much and obediently follows his nanny. He was close to his nanny, she adored him and often accompanied him as he spends time with his big brother

Aside from his nanny, his older brother was like a bright star to him. He was the first person Shurei chased with his own two feet. He loved his brother's gentle embrace, and would cry whenever he was ripped apart from him(an exaggeration). His brother was always entertaining him and is always curious to what new things he would take interest in. Though nothing can take his attention as much as books does. Picture books took his interest and he loved sitting on his brother's laps, listening to him read the story to him. It was so full of emotion and whimsy that it was far more interesting than any toys and trinkets that were given to him.

When he was 5 years old, a tragedy struck. As he was walking down Hirokō-ichi with his nanny, he wandered off on his own in the middle of the busy crowd. He stumbled upon an empty street where he locked eyes with an old woman. Hearing her mumble incoherent words, he was then taken by the old woman. For a few days he was stuck in a dark and musty room. Day by day he was starved of food and water. Even when he spoke to her, she just continued humming instead of acknowledging him. As he grew weaker, he was finally found and saved. He was bedridden for weeks.

His mother would tell him, pointing at his eyes. Hideous, monstrous. This is exactly why he was kidnapped. Why he suffered and everyone around him suffered. His family, his brother, all suffered this ordeal. His nanny whom he loves so much lost her job due to this incident. And now he has fallen ill. It was all his eyes' fault. If only they could be hidden from the world. These ugly pair of orbs.

Shurei wore thick foggy glasses to obscure his eyes from then on. He refuses to ever take them off and would throw a fit if someone ever tries to pry them off of him. His mother decided to confine him in his own room due to his poor health which he struggled to recover from ever since that incident. His only friend came when he was 11 years old. A family of traveling sea merchant who his family were loyal patrons to. They have a son about his age, which his mother allowed to visit his room during their stay in Radiant Harbor. He would make many memories with him, sending letters to each other when he would venture out to the sea. Everytime he returns, Shurei would be eager to listen to his tales out at sea. Hearing about the different villages always excites him.

They made a promise to each other. Shurei promised he would become stronger, and his friend promised to show him the world with his own two eyes. His friend would then accidentally saw his eyes during an outting. Despite Shurei's protests about the crowd, his friend insisted and it lead to an accident. Shurei was pushed to the ground by the crowd and his glasses were knocked right off his face. And his friend saw them... his hideous eyes. Shurei quickly tried to cover them up but it was too late.

And thus, his friend went out on a journey to sea once again. He received a letter from him. An apology letter... and they started becoming pen pals once again. Deciding to take his own life back one step at a time, Shurei started apprenticeship under a scholar in Radiant Harbor. Day by day he slowly started walking more, exercising more, and studying more. He loved learning under his mentor, there are many fascinating things in the sun empire that he has yet to discover or see for himself. During the longer absence of his friend, he did his best to improve himself. Yet there are many anxiety and doubts still forming within his mind.

And his worries were validated by his friend's return after a long delay. A heartbreaking news. And overwhelming amount of guilt falling down his shoulders. Shurei can't help but feel like he was the cause of the misfortune that befall his friend. and he wants nothing more than to repent for the misfortune that he has caused... He promise that this time he will do everything in his power to protect those near and dear to him.

Trivia:

• Shurei is a good dancer. He has a soothing singing voice but he is too shy to showcase both. He would only let people close to him hear him sing and see him dance... only if they ask for it
• Shurei tend to have nerdy rambles, especially on topics he deeply understood/takes interest in
• Shurei easily cries, but it's hard to see behind his large thick frames
