Personality

  • easy going | energetic | friendly
    = social | extroverted | nonchalant
  • careless | superficial | detached

Tuyên's personality developed into a totally different type one day for reasons not known to most. He tends to be very friendly which makes him approachable to most but as you get closer, or at least try to, you'll realise that he's actually quite careless in how he deals with relationships and serious matters in general. He seems almost complacent which tends to annoy the people closest to him. Despite this, people further from his friend group still like to hang around him because of his laid-back, easy-going persona. Whatever happens, he would follow to see where this leads. He's very sociable, going to every event he's invited to and being the life of the party. There's never a dull moment when he's around because of the energy he brings. Being high energy and enjoying spending his days with others, he is quite the extrovert. He isn't too concerned about people's opinions of him, but he does enjoy their company, nevertheless. Don't be fooled however, just because he chooses to hang around certain crowds often doesn't mean he sees the relationship as anything more than playmates. Tuyen is simply a detached fellow who can't be bothered to care about others in the same way they might care about him. He's no sociopath but he can't seem to shake the allegations; not that he was trying to clear himself to begin with. In fact, he's quite superficial upon first meeting. He only views people for the surface level that they show him and doesn't bother to dig deeper. Tuyên lets the apathy lend itself to his nonchalant behaviours. He doesn't get in people's business, and it takes a lot for him to get riled up in that way. It seems he is always holding back and draws his own line. Perhaps he's actually worried about what people dig up. He simply doesn't want to be vulnerable.

History

TW: DEATH

Tuyên was born in a modest sea merchant family. His early life was spent on the docks and ship deck. Though they could never stay in one place for long, he always had something to do to relieve his boredom whether that be finding treasure amongst the ship's chests or digging sand pits when they finally came ashore. He had an older brother whom he loved to follow around and imitate. In fact, the two became very close. His older brother was excited to finally have someone he can get along with. This is where Tuyên's love for the sea evolved. He and his brother always fought to steer the ship and learned to swim and catch the waves. His parents also loved doting on the two of them. Despite their active lifestyle, they managed their best. As he grew older, he became an excitable, thrill seeking individual. This contrasted his brother who developed a more mature and serious identity.
As they entered school age, their parents discovered that both boys had a knack for academia. They were able to pick up fast and advance quicker than their mates. With this newfound interest in their schooling, the parents started directing funds from their business to give their boys a good education. With their parent's encouragement, they boys excelled and even skipped grades. Tuyên was the more social out of the two, so he made friends easily. He became quite close to a little scholar boy despite the nature of his parents' jobs forcing him to relocate every few years. The family had taken a liking to the scholar boy his family. The merchants often provided services to them, and their son was a good influence to Tuyên. During his voyages to new towns and cities, he would write letters and bring back souvenirs to his friend. Unfortunately for Tuyên, this soon became the only type of enjoyment he'd have time for. He started taking his studies more seriously. Coupled with their lifestyle, this made studying complicated. Something his parents didn't seem to notice was that their expectations set on the brothers slowly caused a rift between them. Everything started becoming a contest to see who could be the better of the two. The brothers who were once close saw the other as competition to make their parents proud and hopefully be the one who carried the family into a brighter future. Though they often tried to one up each other, Tuyên was always the one who resorted to silly games to lighten the mood. He grew a bit resentful of his parents for inadvertently pinning him against his brother. Day by day, week by week, the ship deck and port docks that used to be filled with their laughter continued on without them. By the time they were teenagers, both boys had stopped their leisurely activities in favour of their academic studies. The parents were proud of their sons and would gleefully mention them to everyone. Endless days the boys spent in their rooms studying as to not disappoint. Tuyên still found time to visit old friends whenever he had the chance. His brother would join along when he could but that was less than he wished. Time passed until they became young adults. It finally came time to set sail again to a previously visited but bountiful city. The family prepared their ship for the next journey. There were predictions of a developing storm along that path, but the family needed to make this shipment to the next destination as they had time sensitive merchandise aboard. They waved to the city they called home for the past few years as they exited the docks. The departure wasn't too emotional. They expected to come back soon.
A few weeks of quiet sailing made the family nervous. This meant a strong storm was coming. They did everything they could to prepare for the onslaught. Of course, their initial plan was to sail around this danger, but nature decided against this. The gale pushed harder as the rain began drenching the upper decks. With each row of the boat, they grew confident that the ship was holding. Everything was secure and all seemed to go according to plan... That was until one wave rocked the boat too hard. One of the shipping boxes wasn't secured properly and flung out from under the deck. As everyone else was shuffling to recover the closest containers, Tuyên knew the one escaping was their most valuable cargo. It was a quick and dumb but instinctual reaction; he stumbled after it. The moment he did, deep regret sunk in. The young man was thrown overboard, holding the precious cargo. Luckily, everyone was tied to the safety pole. In that moment, he felt a tug on his line. Glancing back, he saw his brother. Tuyen let out a sigh of relief as he was dragged back aboard. The rain was pelting harder and the sky blackened. He remembered holding onto his brother tightly as the cyclone tossed them in every direction.
Just when his arms felt like melting off his shoulders, the storm finally relented. The juddering of the ship grows rhythmic. As Tuyên shook off his discomfort, he finally gets a chance to catch his bearings. Exciting. He turned to his brother smiling. They had beaten the storm! Except his brother was nowhere in sight. In his arms was the valuable chest he saved. His heart sank as he hurried around the ship. Nowhere. His family came out from under the planks. Under the cover of the storm, no one could see or hear anything... They searched everywhere but all they found was a snapped rope. Once they arrived at the next port, the family had to continue business as usual. With no time to process what they went though, the family did what they could to offload their inventory. Reality sank in one night as Tuyên sat alone on the ship. Riddled with deep guilt and regrets, Tuyen began closing off and taking out his frustrations the only way he knew how. He got more reckless and, in a bid to forget about that night, he would go out partying with anyone who would entertain in the offer, Eventually, this became his new normal. His parents, too saddened with the grief of their eldest son, couldn't support their youngest. The family grew disheveled. His parents dove deeper into their business while Tuyên lost his way. partying and wasting away with every docking.
