Personality
Masami considers herself to be a gentle soul and tries to extend patience and kindness to whoever she can. Much like her modest nature suggests, she is very humble, but whether that humility stems from a positive place is something even she isn't sure of. Is she humble because she was raised that way or is she humble because she is content and feels she dare not ask for more. She would rather be a solid rock and place of reassurance than careless, wild, and free.
Admittedly, though, Masami is actually quite expressive even if she tries to present as composed. Her emotions tend to get the better of her and that shows in the way her hair flares out whenever her reactions are too strong. To those she's comfortable with, she's also quite the tease, loving to joke and poke a bit of good-natured fun at her friends. Whenever no one is around, Masami is also quite adventerous and can even be called bold in some sense. Even as an adult, she has no care on if her hands get dirty from hard-work, she just needs to realize that it's okay to rely on other people.
History
Masami grew up in a family of well-known shrine keepers and priests. Countless times, her family was called to travel to different lands to perform prayers and the occasional exorcism of a feral ghost type that chose to make a home without the occupants consent. Masami would be taken along to be shown how her family performs their duties—duties she would be expected to fill later on—and she couldn't figure out whether to be mesmerized or just… bored. Ever since she was a baby, her life had been attached to the shrine, and while her parents never forced her to become a priestess, it's all she's known. One of the things she was also taught from a young age was healing techniques and that, admittedly, intrigued her far more. While her family did their usual routine, Masami would help to gather herbs and learn various medicinal techniques from other villages she traveled to. The traveling was always her favorite part because she got to meet so many new faces, even if they never stayed around too long.
Back then, she faced that boredom by running around and making friends wherever she could. Masami was an active child, not wanting to sit still for more than a few minutes, and it showed from the many new cuts and bruises she would endure and the new rips and stains her kimonos would gain in the crossfire. At the very least, she was always able to tend to her own wounds so her parents wouldn't be too worried... it was a hit or miss. Yet this constant travel made it really hard for Masami to make any real connections. Most of her "friends" were the temporary kind that kids make when in a new place, and she never stayed somewhere for longer than a week—her home shrine at Gale Springs excluded—and she stopped treating relationships as something that's supposed to be long term.
This same mindset stayed with her even back home, closing her off from other peers until she played with them, but never grew close to them. It allowed her to focus more on her priestess training, but her lack of connections was a concern in its own right. While Masami considers herself to be very lucky with her rather uneventful life, even she has her own issues. One of which is that… she misses singing. She's always had an intense love of song, and would sing and perform to her hearts content as a kid, but as she grew older, that desire went to the back burner as she focused on other more important things.
At the age of 18, her mother wanted to pass on the title of Head Priestess to Masami, expecting her to accept and signifying that she was finished with her job, and that now it was her daughter's turn. After all, she's been trained for taking over since she was a baby, but Masami declined, saying she found more meaning and joy in treating others and helping them get better. While her family was a bit disappointed that she wouldn't take over the shrine, they didn't stop her. Reassuring Masami that she would always have a home back at the shrine, they let her pursue her interest in medicine so that she could help in some way. With a mature demeanor, discipline fully practiced and mastered, she happily provides assistance to anyone in need.
However, sometimes she wishes that there was another voice aside from her songs to keep her company.
