History
Trigger Warnings:
Chronic illness
There was no such thing as an honest performance and Tomoe learned this truth before he had words to name it:
The prestigious Hoshino theater family gave birth to Tomoe, who grew up under the impossible expectations of a lineage known for its extraordinary performers and legendary mask-changing techniques. Tomoe is the kind of person who notices every tiny mistake, whether it is a flaw in a costume, an actor’s posture, or a change in someone’s expression. He holds himself to impossibly high standards and is often his own harshest critic. Though not naturally talented, unlike his sister, he is easily embarrassed by failure and hates allowing others to see him struggle.
Rather than admit when he is frightened or insecure, Tomoe tends to hide behind composure, dry sarcasm, and an occasionally sharp tongue. He can come across as aloof, intimidating, or even arrogant, especially when he is uncomfortable, but beneath his controlled exterior is someone deeply sensitive and fiercely loyal to the people he loves. Tomoe is protective almost to a fault, often putting other people’s needs before his own while insisting that he is perfectly fine. He rarely expresses affection openly, preferring to show it through minor acts of care, practical help, and an unwavering willingness to protect those close to him.
Despite his confidence in his abilities, Tomoe secretly fears that he will never be good enough.
He spends his nights practicing alone, repeatedly correcting his movements and expressions until they are nearly flawless. Every mistake frustrated him, but his stubborn determination prevents him from giving up. The one person who sees through his carefully controlled exterior is his younger sister, Kohana.
Chronically ill and unable to participate in the theater as she once hoped, Kohana created masks and became Tomoe’s closest confidante. Their relationship brings out a softer side of him: playful, affectionate, and occasionally exasperated. Around Kohana, Tomoe allows himself to complain, joke, and drop some lies he shows everyone else. She encourages his talent and gives him a mask of her own creation, unknowingly giving him the first tool through which he will explore the many identities he eventually carries.
When Kohana’s health deteriorates, Tomoe began impersonating her during performances and public appearances. His extraordinary observational skills make him almost frighteningly good at imitation. He studies people instinctively, memorizing their voices, gestures, habits, and expressions until he can reproduce them perfectly.
Then, what begins as an act of love slowly becomes an identity crisis. Tomoe becomes so skilled at becoming Kohana that even he questions where her identity ends and his begins. The Hoshino family increasingly relied on his ability to maintain the illusion of Kohana’s presence, forcing Tomoe deeper into a role that demanded absolute control. For someone who already struggles to understand himself outside of other people’s expectations, the constant performance becomes increasingly suffocating.
His situation becomes even more complicated when his family arranges a politically advantageous marriage between him and his childhood friend, Ryūki. Tomoe initially resents the arrangement, stubbornly refusing to allow another part of his life to be decided for him. Yet Ryūki is one of the few people capable of seeing past Tomoe’s polished exterior. Their personalities clash constantly: Ryūki is impulsive, energetic, and reckless, while Tomoe is cautious, precise, passive aggressive, and perpetually irritated by Ryūki’s inability to think before acting. Despite this, years of trust and platonic affection have built their friendship, until he begins to inadvertently, fall for his best-friend.
When Kohana’s health becomes increasingly fragile, Tomoe and Ryūki work together to protect her. Tomoe appears publicly as Kohana alongside Ryūki, creating the illusion of a romantic relationship that keeps society from questioning her absence. Behind closed doors, however, Tomoe tries to remain himself. They began secretly moving Kohana to Ryūki’s estate so she could live away from the fox trap that was her parents’ home. But society expects the supposed romance between Ryūki and Kohana to end in marriage. To prevent that, Tomoe and Ryūki stage a dramatic public breakup at a prestigious gala.
The performance should have been simple. Instead, Ryūki’s accusations strike directly at the truth Tomoe has spent years avoiding: that beneath every role he plays, he no longer knows who he is. And for once, Tomoe’s carefully maintained composure breaks. The scandal succeeds in ending the supposed relationship, but it leaves Tomoe facing a much larger problem. With Kohana now safe and able to get the treatment she deserves, he now faces the question he has avoided since childhood, alone.
Tomoe has spent years believing that perfection is the same thing as worth. He’s learned how to anticipate other people’s needs, hide his emotions, and transform himself into whatever person a situation demands. But he now needs to learn how to exist simply as himself.
