Personality

POSITIVE [Adventurous, Alert, Resourceful]
NEGATIVE [Selfish, Rebellious, Irritable]

Umito is someone that loves to experience new things for themself. She can hear things others have experienced and want to do those things for herself. Like if someone talked about a dangerous cave they encountered, she’d be the type to simply want to go find it herself. This leads her to being very open to experiencing things that may be considered scary or dangerous for others and helps her be ready for any future situation as well.

They are someone that’s got a high alertness for their surroundings. Umito isn’t a fan of getting caught off guard and this has led them to often watch for possible signs of danger or opportunities. This is especially true when it combines with their own adventurous nature, as they will check areas out beforehand just to be on the safe side of everything. This vigilance usually pays off as they’ve managed to avoid numerous accidents for themself and others like this.

Umito can be rather clever with his use of his surroundings, definitely not someone who suffers from functional fixedness. He’s the type that can and will absolutely use a rock as a hammer if he has nothing else more proper on hand. He will use anything at his disposal to accomplish his goals and honestly he feels a good bit of pride when he does something with little to normally accomplish it. After all, his resourcefulness does lead to less dangerous situations and dealing with other situations in a nice timely manner without too much hassle.

This dragon is a selfish one, often thinking of himself before those around him. He prioritizes his well-being and happiness above others and doesn’t mind making it known at all. He doesn’t understand why others would bend over backwards for someone else, especially if doing so would make them unhappy. Even less so when others end up continuously getting hurt while helping someone else. All of that in consideration is why he can sometimes isolate himself from others and can be seen as almost cold in a sense.

Umito has a bit of an issue following orders in general. She is nearly a contrarian by nature and often has to resist the urge to do the opposite of what others want her to do just because. To her, bending to others feels restrictive and makes her just want to go the other way regardless of the consequences of doing so. This applies even more if she doesn’t like someone, as she doesn’t even try to hide that she outright isn’t doing what the person wants.

Umito has a bit of a temper issue. They can find the smallest things irritating or just annoying just because they inconvenience them. This often ends up showing in their expressions as they have a hard time hiding it, nor would they want to hide it. They want people to know when they’ve pissed them off and will make it their problem without a second thought. After all, why should they just let those that have caused them distress just walk away.

History

TW List: Brief mentions of Child Abuse/Neglect, Mentions of injury and kidnapping

Umito was born in Scorched Mountain as a set of twins to parents that weren’t exactly the best people. It was miraculous that both children would make it out of their baby years alive as the parents simply didn’t care for them literally. The two just did the bare minimum to keep the children fed and clothes and not a touch more.

If not for the two getting in active trouble and the children being rescued by a concerned merchant man, it was likely the two could have died before ever reaching their teens. The merchant man, Akito, took the twins in as his own children to raise alongside his older son, Yuuki. With Akito, Umito and his sister, Haruka, were raised in a much wealthier lifestyle. They were showered with love that they were sorely missing prior to their rescue and that helped speedrun the bond that was previously just not there, even if the twins still withheld a lot of their own issues out of habit.

Umito would take to cooking when they were old enough to be trusted around open flames without hurting themself. Not to mention other lessons that would be shared with them, such as reading, writing, calculations, and how to be a merchant. Sure, they weren’t going to take over the business that Akito had, as that was their older brother’s role; but it gave them the tools to make it on their own if it was needed in the future.

After Umito turned twelve, Akito would take in another child, a little girl named Kanami. Umito would overhear what had happened to Kanami, that her parents were killed in front of her by some bandits, and take it upon themself to aid the girl. Umito would often circle Kanami, more than the other siblings, and a bond would form between the four year old and them. That’s not to say that the others didn’t form a bond, just that Umito’s was stronger.

Over the next couple years, Kanami could be found sticking very closely to Umito, even during training or teaching times. Umito would have started to train with a sword as a form of self-protection, thinking that maybe they could be a samurai if they worked hard enough. After all, what better way to repay Akito for everything he’s done for them than offering a strong source of protection? Yuuki would be busy with his training to take over the business and Haruka was far more intrigued in taking care of animals, giving each of the siblings a goal and path as they grew up.

A day to be remembered would come after Umito turned fourteen; it was a full family trip out towards Gale Springs. Akito had business there and wanted Yuuki to come along to watch the proceedings, Umito volunteered to go as their sword training had been going exceptionally well. And because Umito was going, Kanami whined until she was allowed to tag along as well. So with Haruka staying behind, the rest of the family went with guards towards Gale Springs with no incident. However, not long after they left, the entire crew would be attacked by bandits. In the confusion, Umito would spot Kanami get taken and would give chase.

Umito would eventually catch up and have to fight to rescue their little sister, but this would lead to them being largely separated from the rest. They’d go to turn back to the group with Kanami hiding in their arms, but then the bandits that were coming from the battle would start chasing them down. With little choice, Umito would flee towards Noir Vale’s forest as fast as the horse would take them. They would manage to escape within the trees, but with no idea if returning was a good idea, they continued towards Noir Vale with their injuries becoming more apparent as the jostling was getting to them. Kanami’s shaking slowly died down as her fears seemed to subside with Umito's protection.

When they finally arrived in Noir Vale, it was everything Umito had as the adrenaline that kept them going was fading away. Thankfully, they found someone to help them prior to passing out; allowing them to get medical attention and food before explaining their situation to that specific person.

While contemplating their next move, it was increasingly clear that they were unsure of the outcome of the battle. Their family’s safety was completely unknown and it was too dangerous to try to go check with just themself because they had to care for Kanami as well. They knew that at least Haruka was safe at home, and maybe they’d hear something back before long from travelers and maybe send a courier towards Haruka to let her know what happened.

Regardless of what the future held, Umito focused on the now and quickly moved to start trying to get their sister and them a place to stay for possibly long-term. Knowing that they had no connections and no money meant it’d be hard to simply return to Scorched Mountain on short notice, not to mention dangerous with those bandits still out there. So with the help of the person that helped them when they first showed up, they got a small home and started to work as a cook.

Though, with the dissatisfaction of the ingredients they were given to work with, they moved to become a hunter. To secure their own ingredients to cook with and make something they are proud of instead of simply pulling from others. Of course, it was rough at first. They were skilled with a blade, but hunting required much more than simple swordplay to succeed. Eventually they’d get the hang of it; at the cost of a few scars littering their body.

Years would actually fly by before they knew it. Umito would have sent a letter to Haruka about their survival and what they’ve been up to with Kanami. The letter they’d get back would force their hand to stay put with Kanami as it seemed the bandit attack really did a number on their dad’s finances because he lost much of the deal that was conducted. Umito would send another letter informing their family that they’ll stay in Noir Vale, taking care of Kanami so that they didn’t put pressure on the family finances and that they were confident they’ll be fine.

With the confirmation that their family was safe; Umito’s focus went entirely on raising money on their own and taking care of Kanami. Not to mention the connections they’ve made in Noir Vale were admittedly a little hard to simply just up and leave now.

    Haruhi TakedaUmito Jiyuu

    • Friend
    • Rival

The were childhood rivals when they were both training to be samurai. Haruhi admired Umito's skill and determination. The pair haven't talked since Umito ended up in Noir Vale and Haruhi's family name became disgraced. They think about him but find themself a bit glad he wasn't around for their fathers failures.

Question of the Day6

QOTD #6Is your character capable of creating inhuman noises? Something akin to the pokemon they are?

Umito has a rumble type growl that they can do when angered, or a low tone purr when they're content. They are also able to make metallic jingling type noises on behalf of their scales.

QOTD #5When you go to a festival, what's your favorite thing to do? Get snacks, hang out with friends, play games, ECT?

*"A good festival has to have good food and games, not much else to do if not."* Umito definitely goes to most festivals to try out food made by others, sometimes even selling food themself. Of course, if they aren't selling or sampling food, they do enjoy simply trying their hands at the many games going on. They have rather good dexterity so they tend to do well, but as we all know most are rigged to fail most of the time so it isn't always a win. Just coming close to it. It's also fair to say that they'd drag any friends they have, or any new ones they make at the festival, towards either one of the above activities.

QOTD #4Inspiration board, kin wheel, college of random assortment of photos—whatever it is, what makes up your character? Who or what is their inspiration? Their conceptual theme?

Umito views their adoptive father as a pretty strong inspiration; but they won't go and admit that readily to other people. As for what inspired Umito as a character was that I really like that asshole archetype where the character ends up doing good things for other people for purely selfish reasons. Their words and actions don't match their intent in a positive way. Also, I've said it before but stating it here so it's on the char sheet, the song Everything Burns from ffxiv really encapsulates how much of a thrill seeker Umito actually is~

QOTD #3Describe your going to bed routine. Do you have any quirks in your sleeping habits? How do you snore?

Usually heads to bed after having a cup of tea to relax after a long day. Finds themself often curled up while they sleep. No snoring, but some may hear jingling of metal as they roll around.

QOTD #2What would you do on a rainy day?

When they were younger, Umito would stay indoors with their adopted family and play games like go or shogi with their older brother. Nowadays though? They rarely stay inside, much to their little sister's shagrin. They go out and check their traps as if it was any other day, prolly more rigorously than normal as the rain can cause more of them to fail. Just as well, they dont want to have caught something just for it to be trapped in the rain just cause they took a break for the weather.

QOTD #1who were you closer to as a child? Mom or dad?

Umito only has a dad, so obviously closer to their dad without question.
