Haruhi is by nature a very cheerful and hopeful person. They find a natural ease in being able to look for the bright side of this. This could be attributed in part to their childish nature and their strong belief that they can strive to make the best out of anything. Thus, everything will end up fine in the end. Having a very black and white view on the world that makes it difficult for them to understand more complex emotions in others and situations.
They are a hard worker, always wanting to be doing something that lends well to keeping up with being an explorer. They take pride in what they can accomplish when they put their mind to it. They are confident, self-assured, not often doubting who they are. Other people might not like them but that's fine for the most part, they like them and so long as someone is judging them based on their character then they can be happy about that at least.
They find themselves very fond of other people's company and feel most at ease when around others, even if it's just while sitting around and doing nothing. Not that they can sit still for very long; they are far too energetic for that and would rather run around or bounce on their feet. They have a tendency to be very touchy, wishing to shower their friends with affection, most commonly in the form of hugging or latching onto their arms.
They are a very expressive person, from their body language to their how open they are in conveying their emotions. It's commonplace to see them being much like an open book. They have a rather hard time keeping their expressions a secret. They like to be honest with people and not leave anyone questioning how they are feeling at any given moment.
Their more emotional sense of reasoning can lead them to be rather impulsive, often acting on their gut and trusting in their instincts. They aren’t blind to the risks and dangers that can get them in. They just would rather follow what feels right at the end of the day. On top of being impulsive, they are also very stubborn, once they have a planned course of action in their mind it can be incredibly hard to shake them from it.
They have an unwavering moral compass when it comes to what is wrong and right which isn't necessarily a bad thing until their very black and white view on things comes into play. They have yet to fully understand that the world isn't filled with "Good" and "Bad" people, and they are quick to label people in one of the two categories, not taking into account the moral grays in reality. They fail to understand how anything they personally deem wrong could in any way have an understandable reason and feel that when a wrong has been committed the person committing the wrong should be punished in some way to atone for it.
History
Haurhi was born the only child to a Samurai father. One they looked up to and idolized as they grew. He was their hero, strong and honorable! They wanted to be just like him, a samurai able to protect those they were in charge of keeping safe. They were an excitable child, a bit of a handful for their mother alone when their father was away but never purposefully troublesome.
The last time Haruhi saw their father was when he left for a battle that would be lost. Their whole world was tossed upside down when they and their mother learned the news of their father fleeing the battlefield. A coward and a disgrace to the samurai way. It shattered their perception of the man.
The dishonor of their father’s actions, caused their mother and themself to lose their place and higher standing. Thrown into poverty and forced to move to the outskirts of the village. Their mother grew cruel and neglectful at that time. She was bitter, resentful towards the man who had abandoned his lord and family. Haruhi was the frequent target of her anger when attention was spared to them. They were so much like their father. Their smile, their laugh, their cheerful energy. She hated them for it and in turn Haruhi internalized the pain.
They took to picking up odd jobs to make ends meet. Doing whatever work they could get their hands on to bring money in. These odd jobs would help lead them to working under a merchant for a while. The Jiyuu family had fallen on hard times themselves. The merchants in need of more hands but with poorer coffers, were glad to have Haruhi to help. It was through working with them that Haruhi would find their footing once more. They took an interest in the maps they saw around them. They guided people into the city before, to different places within it when they were new. This was a way they realized what they wanted to be doing. What they needed to fill that need to not sit still and to be able to be social, helpful all while doing it. They took time to study maps and learn the ways of making them so they could guide others in their travels. Be it in person, or through an easy to read map they could provide. The Jiyuu family helped them gain these skills and gave them a place to sell some of the maps they made. Taking a cut of the profit while doing so.
Their cheerful, happy demeanor remained throughout the years. Their desire to aid and actions to guide others, to explore, hid beneath the surface their quest to find their father. There was only one way he could pay for the dishonor he had brought them and their mother. They knew it wouldn’t be a price he’d pay himself, so they will take it into their own hands once they find him.
