Personality

Never at the heart of a party, Kei seems as cold and distant as ice itself, and she always prefers to watch and listen rather than talk all day with people. She comes off as rather flat and unexpressive, and painfully secretive. While she seems familiar enough with current trends, Kei still seems out of place with a more antiquated dialect and older fashioned tastes, like the times have left her behind somewhat. Though she finds this makes some interactions more tiresome than she likes, she still exhibits a cool if indifferent confidence in her general demeanour like it doesn't matter at all. This icy and apathetic demeanour is constant, to the point that many wonder if she's even capable of expressing any emotion at all.

Kei's curiosity of the mortal world is a driving factor in her decision making, which results in poking her nose around small towns and Radiant Harbour proper to observe new trends, and it's why she's as familar with the area and geography around her home as she is. Much to her chagrin, her explorations into settlements and the harbour proper do sometimes end up with her getting stuck in situations where she has to deal with people more than she likes, but she knows that comes with the territory of going into town. Kei is also rather fond of fancy things such as jewelry and fashion, so she finds herself coming back to see the latest trends. This also influenced her choice of official occupation, choosing to work with jewelry and kanzashi as well as crafting her ice sculptures. She is more sentimental than she lets on-which for the record is not at all with that icy deadpan of hers-having witnessed the culture and trends change over time, and things be forgotten has driven Kei to try and preserve these things herself, even if they should only exist in her own memory.

As is typical of a fox, she has a cunning nature and uses her wit to see out her own ends, sometimes at the expense of others, though usually such individuals are often ones of ill repute or need a lesson taught to them. Underneath her icy deadpan is a vicious cruelty saved for the worst, but even this is kept in check and saved for particular cases. She won't terrorize any law abiding citizens, knowing that wouldn't do her any favours and more likely to result in her getting chased out if not treated as and dealt with like any dangerous yokai. Kei is strongly concerned with her own survival and freedom, and being sealed away as a dangerous yokai would be less than ideal, so she maintains a balancing act between avoiding such a fate and her instincts as a kitsune. Her torment is saved for those who step out of line and cause trouble. Surely that's fine, she figures. She treats such people like toys for her own amusement, and this toying extends to her opponents in battle. She also remembers all favours and slights, and will return them without fail, be they good or bad.

History

Kei was born in the cold northern reaches of the Empire, in the territory of what was Ice Bay at the time. A member of an old lineage of ice foxes, she grew up learning from her family how to hunt and protect herself, how to hone her powers as a kitsune as she got older, and Kei even learned from some yokai around her, but most of all stories about the world and yokai and these entities called humans fascinated the young kitsune. Despite her curiosity, Kei never encountered humans until she was able to take on a human form well enough to blend in a human society long enough to explore a small nearby settlement properly. Some had ears or tails like she did, and others lacked any such trait at all, or bore traits of completely different pokemon, and they would rush this way and that hurriedly. So many things were new to the young kitsune, and she found herself returning to continue learning more about them and their every changing trends and tastes. The world as she knew became a thing of the past, replaced by something new.

It would soon come to pass that Kei would learn nothing lasted forever. The small remote settlement she had watched over became smaller and smaller, with people leaving and buildings sitting abandoned by the people who left. Civilization was ephemeral and ever changing, she learned. And that view would be reinforced centuries later when calamity struck the land in the form of the chaos caused by the Weather Kami's wrath. What was left of that little settlement was destroyed by the ensuing natural disasters.

Kei, her family, and countless others had to leave their old homes behind. The old villages that had existed for centuries had been wiped off the face of the earth, and replaced by four new ones. Kei and her family found themselves settled in a region far away from their old home, what was now Radiant Harbour, and Kei started to settle into her new life, finding this place far more interesting for the variety of people who would pass through the harbour.

Though Kei still has her secrets and maintains some distance, she is a known figure in Radiant Harbour by now. She continues to observe the mortal world and its ever changing nature, exploring the town and getting involved with mortal society through her work as an artisan as well as some of her antics in occasionally toying with mortals.

Additional

Kei has a lower body temperature, (0 Degrees C) than normal, but this is a healthy average temperature for her. The air around her is also colder than normal, and any water vapour in the air in her vicinity will freeze on her fur, clothes, and hair, giving her a sparkling appearance on sunny days as the frost reflects sunlight.

Though her nature as a supernatural entity isn't exactly a secret given the fact that she has not aged even slightly since she started appearing more regularly in Radiant Harbour, only very powerful diviners, priests and shrine maidens are able to recognize her presence as a yokai and know her true age. As a thousand year old kitsune, her power is sufficient enough that it masks her supernatural nature from most; in passing she's just another gijinka. Most people can only guess her age as four centuries at least based on accounts of her in Radiant Harbour and have no idea she's a thousand years old at this point.

The kitsunebi she conjures are made of wisps of ice crystals as opposed to flames, and they have the appearance of pale blue flames.

Kei's eyes, even in her gijinka form, have tapetum lucidum, so she's spooked people before at night or in the dark when her eyes reflect light.

While Kei specializes in creating ice sculptures as the service she primarily provides as an artisan, she has also picked up a number of other crafting skills over her lifetime, and is partial to crafting jewellery when it comes to other mediums.

She does not cook often, past roasting meat over a fire or freezing it first. It's not a matter of skill, it's that she can't be bothered putting a lot of time into preparing food. That being said, if someone else were already to have cooked something and she didn't have to wait for it or wait too long, she will eat it.

Though she doesn't have the patience to cook full meals, Kei can create shaved ice on the spot with her power over ice. However, there are cases where she will deliberately give dubious characters shaved ice that's so bitterly cold it will cause brain freeze as a punishment for ill deeds. This is also one of the punishments she dishes out to greedy or corrupt mortals, or if someone crosses her.

She has visited the other three villages a few times over the centuries, and may still visit them on occasion if something that catches her interest prompts her to visit again.

Kei has few weaker yokai under her service that may be seen with her from time to time. While they say they serve her and do help her out, she's also looking out for them since they're only likely to get bullied by other yokai.
